6th Framework Programme (FP6)

Please note: all FP6 calls are closed. To participate in the Framework Programme please visit FP7

European Union R&D funding is coordinated within a general Framework Programme in which a number of specific programmes address key objectives. The Framework Programme serves two main strategic objectives:

  • strengthening the scientific and technological bases of industry, and
  • encouraging the EU's international competitiveness while promoting research activities in support of other EU policies.

The Sixth Framework for Research and Technological Development (FP6) was the main financial and legal instrument of the EC to implement the European Research Area alongside national efforts and other European co-operative research activities from 2002 to 2006. FP6 supports collaboration in research, promotes mobility and co-ordination, and invests in mobilising research in support of other EU policies. FP6 had a total budget of €17 500 million.

South Africa's participation in FP6

South Africa's relationship with the EU is one of the country's most strategic partnerships in international S&T relations. Ten years of mutually beneficial cooperation and very successful South African participation in Framework Programmes significantly contributed to enriching the global knowledge base and to supporting human resource development, as well as contributing markedly to improving the quality of lives of both South Africans and Europeans.
