South Africa - European Union Summit
25 July, Bordeaux, France
South Africa and the European Commission held the first South Africa - European Union Summit on 25 July 2008 at Bordeaux, France. The Summit was a high level event aimed at discussing issues of strategic importance to South Africa and Europe ranging from trade, economy and development. The Summit was preceded by two Science and Technology side events, the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) National Contact Point (NCP) meeting and the Water Research for Sustainable Development Seminar. The NCP meeting was held on 22 July 2008 at the South African Embassy in Paris, with the aim of providing South African and French NCPs with the opportunity to learn about South African and French expertise and experience in Framework Programme and to share both networks' best practices. The Government of the Republic of South Africa, the Government of the French Republic and the European Commission also convened the Water Research for Sustainable Development Seminar in order to highlight the strong science and technology partnership between South Africa and the European Union. The seminar focused on how to enhance the contribution of the science and technology partnership to global sustainable development challenges, specifically related to water.


FP7 Financial Guidelines Workshops
15 - 18 July 2008, Birchwood Hotel and OR Tambo Conference Centre, Johannesburg, South Africa
The Workshop aimed to ensure that attendees have all the tools required to interpret and implement FP7 financial rules. This is key in enabling them to understand and implement their own, or their clients' financial responsibilities and options in applying for and undertaking an European Union RTD project. The workshops were offered in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology, ESASTAP, and IST-Africa.

Presentation on "Getting the measure of the South African System of Innovation: Prospects for the Ten Year Innovation Plan"

Prof Michael Kahn, Executive Director of Knowledge Systems and Head of the Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators at the South African Human Sciences Research Council delivered a presentation on "Getting the measure of the South African System of Innovation: Prospects for the Ten Year Innovation Plan." The presentation was hosted by ESASTAP at the South African Mission to the European Union in Brussels. Prof Kahn's presentation was focused on South Africa's efforts to generate indicators for comprehensive annual research and innovation surveys, which play a significant part in supporting evidence-based science and technology policy formulation as well as international benchmarking. These surveys also constitute a critical guidance mechanism for the implementation of South Africa's new Ten Year Innovation Plan including the country's international cooperation with Europe.

7th Meeting of the South Africa - European Commission (EC) Joint Science and Technology Cooperation Committee (JSTCC)
5 - 6 May 2008, Pretoria, South Africa
The JSTCC is tasked to review scientific and technological cooperation between South Africa and the EU and to develop initiatives to improve collaboration. Senior South African and European delegations, respectively led by the Director-General of the South African Department of Science and Technology (DST), Dr Philemon Mjwara, and the Director General of the European Commission's Directorate General Research, Mr Jose Manuel Silva Rodriguez accordingly met for this purpose at the 2008 JSTCC meeting.

ESASTAP/International Research Staff Exchange Scheme (IRSES) Presentation

The EU has created an International Research Staff Exchange Scheme (IRSES) within the EU Framework Programme mobility instrument, aimed at exchanging researchers, technical staff and management between Europe and other countries that have an existing S&T agreement with the EU or are currently in the process of establishing an agreement with the EU member countries.

Celebration: South Africa and European Union - 10 years of fruitful partnership

On 29 November 2007, ESASTAP organised an event to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the coming into force of the South Africa-European Union (SA-EU) Science and Technology agreement. The event was organised on the sidelines of the Group on Earth Observation (GEO) Plenary and Ministerial Summit in Cape Town. Minister Mangena of Science and Technology in South Africa and Commissioner Potocnik of Science and Research in the EU addressed the audience and offered words of gratitude to researchers and the National Contact Points for their role in the successful implementation of the agreement. The Minister and Commissioner also presented certificates of appreciation to the NCPs for their role. Looking back, the SA-EU S&T cooperation has been a huge success with South Africa now one of the most active participants in the EU's Framework Programme. We look forward to another decade of fruitful partnership.

Dinner lecture: Innovation towards a Knowledge-based Economy: Ten Year Plan for South Africa (2008 - 2018)

On the occasion of the visit to Brussels of Dhesigen Naidoo, Deputy Director-General at the South African Department of Science and Technology, The South African Embassy and Mission to the European Union hosted a dinner lecture, delivered by Mr Naidoo on: "Innovation towards a Knowledge-based Economy: Ten Year Plan for South Africa (2008 - 2018)".

Information session: Socio-economic sciences and the humanities (SSH) research under the EU FP7

The information session provided answers to many of the questions and concerns that have been received on SSH in FP7, and further encouraged meaningful participation of South African organisations in FP7. The session specifically targeted the South African SSH industry within the FP7 SSH theme, as well as issues closely related to the theme.

EuroAfrica-ICT Awareness Workshop
8 - 9 October 2007, Gaborone, Botswana
This 2-day event formed a key component of the EuroAfrica-ICT initiative since awareness workshops are aiming at connecting sub-Saharan African and European organisations for ICT partnerships in the framework of the FP7 and to develop scientific and technological cooperation between the two regions.

Talk: Opportunities for participation in the new production technologies component of FP7

ESASTAP hosted a talk by Mr Jyrki Suominen, the programme officer for New Production Technologies at the EU's Directorate-General for Research.

EU FP7 energy information session

ESASTAP hosted an Energy Information Session in Stellenbosch to discuss the EU FP7 during the Biofuels Workshop.

Meeting: South Africa - European Union Dialogue on Knowledge Based Bio-Economy Partnerships for Sustainable Development
18 September 2007, Cape Town International Convention Centre, South Africa
This second meeting was organised at Bio2Biz 2007 by the South African Department of Science and Technology and The European Commission's Directorate-General Research. The meeting provided South African and European researchers with a platform to discuss how the EU and SA could strengthen their cooperation and learn from each other in harnessing knowledge and innovation.

Information sharing session: Transport related opportunities in the Seventh European Union Framework Programme (FP7)
10 July 2007, CSIR International Convention Centre, Pretoria, South Africa
The information session provided answers to many of the questions and concerns that have been received on transport in FP7, and further encouraged meaningful participation of South African organisations in FP7. The session specifically targeted the South African transport industry (public, private and semi-public) within the FP7 transport theme, as well as issues closely related to the theme.

European Conference for Aero-Space Sciences (EUCASS 2007)
1 - 6 July 2007, Brussels, Belgium
The conference aimed to provide a stimulating forum where scientists and engineers exchanged information and experiences. It also offered a venue for decision-makers within public authorities, industry and agencies to come together, as well as an opportunity for young scientists to meet their senior peers and the industry leaders of Europe.

4th European Conference on Research Infrastructures
5 - 6 June 2007, Humburg, Germany
This Conference looked at the best governance models, at the development of a common European strategy, and at the international dimension of Research Infrastructures. This provided valuable feedback in the launch of the EC's 7th Framework Programme and in the updating of the European roadmap of Research Infrastructures. The Conference covered all types of Research Infrastructures including the e-infrastructures and especially distributed ones.

South Africa Science Day Conference

This Conference, presented by the South African Department of Science and Technology, presented a unique opportunity to gain a comprehensive perspective of the exciting world of science and technology activities in South Africa, to meet with South African R&D experts and to discuss the opportunities for knowledge and innovation partnerships between Europe and South Africa.

FP7 ICT Information Sessions

A representative of the European Commission, Thierry Devars of DG-INFSO, was in South Africa on a START IST Project mission. ESASTAP took advantage of his visit by organising two FP7 information sessions in Pretoria and Cape Town. Thierry Devars presented the first ICT FP7 Call and discussed Summaries of Intended Participation (SIPs) with all those who submitted in the ICT theme.

IST 2006: Strategies for Leadership

The European Commission's annual IST Event is the main conference, exhibition and networking event focused on European policies, programmes and priorities in Information Society Technologies (IST). IST 2006 had two main goals: to bring key policymakers together from across Europe to discuss a holistic policy approach to European ICT development; and to explore how tomorrow's future ICT technological, business and social challenges will be addressed by FP7, the EU's 7th Framework Programme for Research (2007 -2013).

Innovation 2010 Seminar

The French South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry and J'adore South Africa in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology and Technology Top 100 hosted a public Innovation 2010 Seminar on 16 November. The seminar focused on science, technology and innovation collaboration opportunities between France and South Africa.

Bio2Biz SA 2006
27 - 29 September 2006, Durban, South Africa
ESASTAP exhibited at Bio2Biz, the annual biotechnology forum for South Africa, supported by the country's leading biotechnology businesses and organisations. A highlight of the conference was the keynote presentation by Dr Line Matthiessen-Guyader of the European Commission. He spoke at the conference about perspectives for biotechnology research and international cooperation under the 7th EU Framework Programme for Research.

Seminar at INSITE 2006: Knowledge for Africa's Development: Going Forward

The "Going Forward" Seminar had as objective to critically analyse the outcomes and recommendations of the "Knowledge for Africa's Development Conference", in order to inform the implementation of knowledge and innovation strategies in Africa. Concurrently the Seminar also served to present the outcomes of the Conference to a broader South African audience. Speakers at the Seminar included renowned South Africa, African and international knowledge economy experts, representing the public and private sector, the innovation, education and ICT communities.

Seminar at INSITE 2006: Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) Support Platforms

The focus of the Seminar was on presenting a number of special support platforms for FP7 to the South African research community, and to describe the important support services they will be rendering to South African FP7 participants in partnership with ESASTAP. Specific presentations outlined each platform's mandate and the support instruments it could avail to promote South African and African participation in the FP7. The Seminar also presented an opportunity for the ESASTAP team to share with the South African research community the latest information on the FP7 preparation as well as progress with the ESASTAP FP7 Summary of Intended Participation (SIP) initiative.

Climate Change R&D Strategy Workshop: "Towards Finalisation and Implementation"

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) held a workshop to launch the ESASTAP campaign to prepare the South African research community for participation in the European Union's forthcoming Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The FP7 will be launched early in 2007.

South Africa and FP7 Euratom Workshop

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) hosted an ESASTAP Workshop to consider the opportunities for South African participation in the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) of the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom) for nuclear research and training activities. The South African research community has not yet engaged extensively with the opportunities presented by the Euratom Framework Programmes. The workshop was therefore convened to share information on the new Euratom FP7 at an early stage, both with regard to the content and modalities for participation. The workshop also served to inform the DST's strategies to promote South African participation in the Euratom FP7 as part of ESASTAP. It is envisaged that the Euratom FP7 will be launched at the end of 2006.

Innovative South Africa Conference

"Innovative South Africa" showcased innovation developments in South Africa and provided a platform for developing an innovation policy dialogue between South African and European partners. Recent trends in innovation policy were explored, whilst South Africa's performance in terms of innovation indicators was considered and common benchmarks discussed. A specific objective was to explore innovation cooperation opportunities between South Africa and Europe, including collaboration under the Seventh Framework Programme and the consideration of investment opportunities.

South Africa - Italy R&D Collaboration Day

The South Africa - Italy R&D Collaboration Day meeting was organized jointly by ENEA, the Italian National Agency for New Technology, Energy an the Environment and ESASTAP, the European - South African scientific and technological advancement programme, in collaboration with APRE, the Agency for the Promotion of European Research. It was aimed at giving information about the EU VII Framework Programme and creating the basis on which to develop cooperation projects between Italy and South Africa within its scheme.

Coeur4L Workshop: European Research and Project Management in Life Sciences

FP7 Food, Agriculture and Biotechnology Workshop

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) hosted a workshop presenting the "Food, Agriculture and Biotechnology" research priority of the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The keynote speaker was Dr Antonio Di Giulio, the Head of Unit for Food Quality R&D in the European Commission's Directorate-General Research. Dr Geoff Meese, South Africa's Framework Programme National Contact Point for Food Safety and Quality R&D also participated in the workshop.

Conference on Knowledge for Africa's Development
8 - 10 May 2006, Johannesburg, South Africa
The conference on "Knowledge for Africa's Development: Innovation, Education, and Information and Communications Technologies" aims to enhance understanding and awareness among key African policymakers and interested stakeholders on the key issues that all African countries need to address to access and use knowledge to strengthen their competitiveness and increase their economic and social well-being.

ESASTAP FP7 Seminar: SME participation in the FP7 and opportunities for industrial R&D cooperation

Workshop - Towards FP7: A South African perspective of INCO participation

The main goal of the workshop was for South African and European Commission representatives to jointly reflect on the successes and challenges of INCO participation in FP6; and to facilitate South African preparation for FP7 by developing strategies to bolster and grow international research partnerships in the context of Framework Programmes.

ESASTAP FP6 Top-Up Call Information Seminar

Coeur4L Workshop: European Research and Project Management in Life Sciences

Seminar - Global Change and Ecosystems Research in South Africa: Opportunities for Partnership with Europe

The Seminar highlighted South Africa's research capacities in fields such as climate change, pollution and environmental risk, the sustainable management of natural resources, environmental technologies, as well as Earth observation and other assessment tools for sustainable development. The Seminar also introduced support and enabling mechanisms, which can facilitate cooperation between South African and European partners in these domains.

South Africa Day in the United Kingdom

The South African Minister of Science and Technology, Mosibudi Mangena, visited the UK from 30 to 31 January 2006 to participate in South Africa Day at the Royal Society in London. This initiative is the result of continued discussions between representatives of the science and technology communities of both countries. This is a joint collaborative effort, between the Department of Science and Technology and the National Research Foundation on the South African side and on the UK side, the Office of Science and Technology and the Royal Society.

South Africa - European Space Cooperation Workshop

The full-day workshop was organised as part of the visit to South Africa by Dr Paul Weissenberg, the Director: Aerospace, Security, Defence and Equipment of the European Commission's Directorate-General Enterprise. The workshop focused on preparing the South African science and technology community for participation in the space activities of the FP7.

Seminar - Energy Research in South Africa: Opportunities for Partnership with Europe

The focus of the Seminar was on presenting the South African energy research landscape to the European research community, including for example a focus on South African R&D capacities in renewable energy, fuel cells and the hydrogen economy, clean coal, nuclear energy, etc. The Seminar also highlighted support and enabling mechanisms, which can facilitate contact and cooperation between European and South African researchers in this area.

The international dimension of the "Europe of Knowledge": a common interest to Europe and to the World

South Africa participated in the International Dimension of the Europe of Knowledge: A Common Interest to Europe and to the World" Conference, which took place from 6 to 7 October 2005 in Brussels. The European and non-European participants to the Conference discussed the challenges of an open "Europe of Knowledge". They shared their perceptions on what common interests mean. They also identified ways to increase the benefits gained from facilitating links between the scientific communities of Europe and the rest of the World.

Information Session: FP6 Information Society Technologies (IST)

The Department of Science and Technology held an information session on opportunities for energy research partnerships in the European Union's Sixth Framework Programme (FP6), presented as part of the European South African Science and Technology Advancement Programme (ESASTAP). The information session was conducted by South Africa's FP6 National Contact Point (NCP) for Energy, Dr Boni Mehlomakulu, in cooperation with the visiting French NCP for Energy, Dr Celine Phillips-Driwa of the French Agency for the Environment and Energy Management (ADEME).

Information session: FP6 Sustainable Energy Systems

Fifth meeting of the South Africa - European Union (SA-EU) Joint Science & Technology Cooperation Committee (JSTCC)

The fifth meeting of the South Africa - European Union (SA-EU) Joint Science & Technology Cooperation Committee (JSTCC) was held in Pretoria on 14 - 15 April 2005. Convened under the SA-EU Agreement on Cooperation in Science and Technology, the JSTCC is tasked with reviewing collaboration between the two parties, including South African participation in the Framework Programmes, sharing new developments in science and technology policy matters and devising strategies for enhancing future collaboration.
