The United Nations has declared 2010 to be the International Year of Biodiversity. There is a significant international research effort related to the conservation and sustainable use of the world's biodiversity resources. South Africa's Ten Year Innovation Plan for example identified S&T in response to global change as one its grand challenges - a focus, which includes an important biodiversity component. Conservation and the sustainable management of biodiversity is also a focus of the EU's Seventh Framework Programme for Research's Environment theme. There is an existing rich portfolio of research cooperation between South Africa and Europe, focused on understanding, conserving and monitoring biodiversity. The Seminar will review this collaboration in order to identify new opportunities for enhancing South African - European biodiversity research partnerships.
