2010 marks the 50th anniversary of the laser, one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century. With applications ranging from advanced manufacturing and materials processing to surgery and medicine, from Earth observation to entertainment, lasers play a critical role in the application of S&T for growth and development. The creation of the African Laser Centre (ALC), a virtual centre of excellence with nodes in several African countries, was, thus, one of the first flagship initiatives implemented under Africa's Science and Technology Consolidated Plan of Action (of the African Union/NEPAD.) South Africa's CSIR National Laser Centre played a pioneering role in the establishment of the ALC and continues to actively support its activities. The seminar will identify opportunities for and propose recommendations on how to promote enhanced laser S&T partnerships between Africa and Europe. The seminar will therefore also highlight how South Africa's bilateral S&T partnership with the EU can also support continental and regional African initiatives - an important dimension of the partnership.
