Airbus and SA enter research partnership

22 September 2006

A new aerospace research and technology initiative which will identify and develop advanced applications for the global aerospace industry will gain impetus from a new partnership between the Department of Science and Technology and Airbus.

Airbus is the world’s leading aircraft manufacturer, and last year South Africa signed a contract to acquire eight Airbus A400M airlifters for the SA Air Force between 2010 and 2012. This contract has led to the new research partnership.

Director-General of the DST, Dr Phil Mjwara, described the agreement as vital in safeguarding and developing South Africa’s competence in the various fields associated with aerospace and aeronautics. He said, “We believe that Airbus, a company whose success is built on its innovative use of pioneering technology, is the best partner to support South Africa in the rejuvenation of its aerospace capabilities, including the all-important arena of research and development into new technologies, techniques and solutions.”

Pilot projects that have already been identified in the global Airbus co-operation strategy with South Africa include research into and development of synthetic fuels, natural fibres and light alloys component technologies. Implementation of the programmes is expected to begin within the next quarter.

The partnership with Airbus will make a contribution to skills development in South Africa as it will foster exchange programmes for students and young graduates in the industry and will help forge closer links between industry and research institutions.

Both South Africa and Airbus are expected to benefit from the partnership as opportunities present themselves for scientific, industrial and academic experts to work together on innovative solutions and advanced technologies. They expect to develop advanced technologies that may later be applied in the aeronautical industry.
