Explore funding opportunities, strengthen partnerships, and unlock innovation potential.
This series of workshops will focus on research and innovation funding opportunities within the Horizon Europe 2025 Work Programme, with a special emphasis on the Africa Initiative III.
The Africa Initiative III encompasses 24 call topics with a combined budget of approximately €500 million, reinforcing the AU–EU cooperation and partnership. Participants will take part in informative sessions alongside practical, hands-on activities to help them navigate the EURAXESS and EU Funding and Tenders Portals with confidence.
FOCUS AREAS
The 24 topics under the Horizon Europe Africa Initiative III are grouped into four priority areas:
- Public Health
- Green Transition
- Innovation & Technology
- Capacities for Science
Through in-depth discussions, attendees will gain a comprehensive understanding of the EU research and innovation funding landscape, enabling them to identify and pursue relevant opportunities.
WHERE AND WHEN
These onsite workshops will take place at five historically disadvantaged institutions (HDIs) in South Africa:
- Monday, 11 August 2025 – University of Venda
- Tuesday, 12 August 2025 – University of Limpopo
- Wednesday, 13 August 2025 – Mangosuthu University of Technology
- Thursday, 14 August 2025 – University of KwaZulu-Natal
- Friday, 15 August 2025 – University of Mpumalanga

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES
- Increase awareness of Horizon Europe 2025, with a focus on the Africa Initiative III, among researchers from HDIs in South Africa.
- Equip participants with skills to prepare competitive project consortia and navigate the Horizon Europe Funding and Tenders portal for proposal submission.
- Highlight funding, mobility, and networking opportunities under Horizon Europe, fostering stronger Africa–EU collaboration in Research and Innovation (R&I).
