Researchers and research teams across Africa and Europe are invited to apply for the EDCTP Prizes 2027, which recognise outstanding contributions to global health research, scientific leadership, capacity strengthening, and international collaboration.
The prizes, awarded by the Global Health EDCTP3 Joint Undertaking, celebrate excellence in research addressing infectious diseases and other global health challenges affecting sub-Saharan Africa. The awards also recognise individuals and teams who have demonstrated a strong commitment to strengthening research capacity and fostering equitable partnerships between African and European institutions.
Prize categories
The 2027 edition includes four prize categories:
- Dr Pascoal Mocumbi Prize (€50,000)
Awarded to an individual who has made exceptional contributions to advancing health research and research capacity development in Africa, with a significant and lasting impact on the health and wellbeing of African populations. - Outstanding Research Team Prize (€50,000)
Recognises collaborative research teams from sub-Saharan Africa and Europe whose work demonstrates scientific excellence, strong partnership, and meaningful impact in advancing global health research. - Outstanding Female Scientist Prize (€20,000)
Honours female scientists who have made significant scientific contributions while also strengthening research capacity through mentorship, leadership, and training of future generations of researchers in Africa. - Scientific Leadership Prizes (€15,000 each)
Four prizes will be awarded to emerging research leaders demonstrating excellence in scientific leadership and innovation. Two awards are reserved for researchers based in Europe and two for researchers based in sub-Saharan Africa, with one female and one male recipient in each region.
Celebrating excellence in global health research
The EDCTP Prizes are awarded every two years and highlight the achievements of researchers and institutions that are advancing health research, strengthening clinical research capacity, and promoting collaboration across regions.
The winners of the EDCTP Prizes 2027 will be announced during the EDCTP Forum 2027, scheduled to take place in Madrid, Spain, from 5 to 9 April 2027.
Call to the African research community
ESASTAP encourages eligible researchers and research teams from South Africa and across the African continent to consider applying for these prestigious awards. The prizes provide an important opportunity to showcase scientific excellence, recognise impactful research, and highlight the value of international collaboration in addressing global health challenges.
