H2020 ERA-NET Programmes

Overview

Horizon 2020 is the financial instrument implementing the Innovation Union, a Europe 2020 flagship initiative aimed at securing Europe’s global competitiveness. Running from 2014 to 2020 with an €80 billion budget, the EU’s new Programme for research and innovation is part of the drive to create new growth and jobs in Europe. South Africa benefits from this programme through the human capital development opportunities offered by international cooperation.

ERA-NET Co-fund
ERA-NET Cofund is a programme under Horizon 2020 designed to support public-public partnerships. It incorporates the former ERA-NET and ERA-NET Plus into a single instrument, with the focus shifted from the funding of networks to topping up funds for single joint calls for transnational research and innovation in selected areas with high European added value and relevance for Horizon 2020. The aim is to increase the share of funding that Member States dedicate jointly.

ERA-MIN
ERA-MIN is a programme aimed at establishing mechanisms and networks that will foster research in the field of industrial production and supply of raw materials. It operates in line with the European Union Raw Materials Initiative. ERA-MIN projects cover the entire raw material value chain from primary to secondary resources, the substitution of the scarce elements, as well as cross-cutting issues like the mitigation of environmental impacts and raising public awareness. This is achieved through co-funding calls, designed and developed specifically for the raw materials sector, with the exception of materials from agricultural production and materials used as fuel.

BiodivERsA

BiodivERsA is an ERA-NET COFUND network of national and regional Funding Organisations promoting pan-European research on biodiversity, ecosystem services and Nature-based Solutions, and offering innovative opportunities for the conservation and sustainable management of biodiversity. Together, major Funding Organisations of BiodivERsA will implement a joint call for research proposals on biodiversity and climate change, which will promote the integration of natural sciences, social sciences and humanities, and stakeholder engagement in the research projects. The calls are launched in the context of the BiodivERsA Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) & Implementation Plan and of the BiodivClim ERA-Net COFUND programme. The projects are funded through national/regional budgets by participating countries for their successful participants and the use of the EC “top-up” funding for EC-eligible countries.
